The following trips are offered by the Bus Trip Committee of the San Diego Chapter, Sierra Club. Of course, many other outings are offered by the chapter, which are published in our newsletter, Hi Sierran, which is sent to members. For more information, send a SASE or call the coordinator (between 9 A.M. and 9 P.M.).


[bus]Memorial Day Backpack Bus Trip, 1997

The 1997 Memorial Day Backpack went to the southern Sierra. For 1998, the destination may be the southern Sierra or the deserts or canyons of the southwest. The trip usually leaves Thursday evening and returns Monday night.


[bus]Fourth of July Backpack Bus Trip, 1997

Wed. evening July 2 - Sun. evening July 6, 1997

The 1997 bus trip went to the Yosemite high country. Our 1998 bus trip will probably head to similar areas in Yosemite.

This trip takes 47 people into the Yosemite high country. Four separate backpacks will visit different areas from Toulumne Meadows and the Tioga Road.


[bus]Labor Day Backpack Bus Trip, 1997

Aug. 28 - Sept 1., 1997 (Thurs. eve. - Mon. eve.)

The 1997 trip went to the eastern Sierra Nevada high country out of Big Pine. The 1998 trip will probably go somewhere in the Sierra Nevada.


[bus]Canyon de Chelly Bus/Fly Trip, 1997

Sept. 20-28, 1997

Travel to another world-another time. Thousand foot sheer sandstone cuffs accent cool streams, small farms, sand washes and living Navajo culture. This trip, which has been offered many times for the Chapter during the past 20 years, has a traveling base camp and truck-transported gear. Navajo guides lead us on Indian trails to ancient Anasazi, Hopi and Navajo sites, pictographs, and other archeological treasures. Our guides offer a special perspective on the canyon history and contemporary Navajo culture. We will camp on Navajo farms on the canyon door and sample the pleasures of a very different life style. The day hikes will be as much as ten miles per day with optional bikes for varied Interests and physical capabilities. Although much of the time will Involve easy hiking, the trip still requires good physical conditioning. A central commissary will be provided and shared with our Navajo hosts.

The trip cost of approximately $695 includes round trip air fare from San Diego to Albuquerque, bus transportation to the canyon, and meals in the canyon, equipment transportation, fees for camping and Navajo guides. and hotel room. In Albuquerque on the last evening All moneys remaining after the trip win be donated to the San Diego Sierra Club Chapter Outing Fund. The trip is open to Sierra Club members only.

[bus]Catalina Island Bus Trip, 1997

Three-day Weekend: Fri. morning Sept. 26 - Sun. Sept. 28, 1997

Once again, back by popular requests, for the 13th time . . . Join us on an unusual and exciting three-day weekend on Catalina Island. This trip will include bus transportation between San Diego and Long Beach, ferry transportation to Toyon Bay on Catalina Island, indoor sleeping on a bunk (in your sleeping bag) and delicious meals prepared for you at the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) at Toyon Bay. Depart San Diego early Friday morning, return about 5:30 P.M. Sunday.

The three day weekend will include unique opportunities to examine the entire ecology of Catalina Island from the hillside flora and fauna to the shallow underwater communities in CIMI-sponsored, educational programs. This trip will allow you to enjoy quiet, restful hours and/or participate in naturalist-guided day hikes to study unique island ecology, time in the Island Ecology Lab, and (special treat) a snorkeling "hike" through the shallow waters of the island (both day and night snorkeling!). Wet suites and snorkeling gear provided along with training and supervision in the use of this equipment.

The cost of this trip is $228 (Add $25 for non-Sierra Club members or send a separate check, payable to the Sierra Club, for $35/person or $43/couple to join the Sierra Club .). Includes all transportation, dormitory-style housing, meals and the use of CIMI facilities and equipment. Please send two Self-Addressed-Stamped-envelopes (SASE) with your check to Jackie Gray.

Use this coupon to sign up for bus trips. The trip description contains information on the various options, sections, or activities; be sure to indicate your preference when registering. Unless otherwise stated in a trip's write-up: A 10% deposit is required to hold your reservation until the trip fee is paid. The trip fee (less deposit) will be refunded if your place is filled. Trip cancellation insurance is available through travel plans (This insurance costs about $8 for a full refund if you cancel due to illness or accident. Medical benefits are usually included). When trips are more than 2/3rds full, they raise money for the Chapter. This covers the trip fees of the coordinator and the leaders and makes a contribution to the Chapter's general fund.
