BACKGROUND

Coastal Cleanup Day is a statewide beach cleanup held throughout California each year. It is a major part of International Coastal Cleanup facilitated by The Ocean Conservancy. The international cleanup includes all 50 states and over 120 countries.

Our goal is to encourage people to clean their local beaches, shorelines and inland waterways while raising awareness about the connection between inland neighborhood non-point source pollution and the ocean. California volunteers picked up a total of 670,986 pounds of garbage and 61,418 pounds of recyclable material in 2000.
