Welcome

The GLS group was formed in 1995 and operated as an active section within the San Diego chapter umbrella until the early new millennium. During this time we enjoyed monthly potlucks/programs at member homes, overnight carcamps, dayhikes and the occasional backpack, with a print newsletter and special Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday events. Unfortunately, while there were ample subscribers to the newsletter, after awhile we had trouble motivating members to participate in the organization and leadership of these events, to the point where the then-acting GovComm made the decision to disband the group. The folks who had been working hard to keep things going had reached a point where they needed relief, and there was none forthcoming.

The GLS listserve was in existence at the time the group disbanded. The local Sierra Club chapter, in order to accommodate the group's desire to continue to have a way for members to communicate with each other regarding outings and activities of interest to active LGBT people, allowed the listserve to continue, as it does to this day.

The local Sierra Club chapter has over 200 certified outing leaders who regularly lead trips of all kinds, from simple dayhikes at Torrey Pines to multiday backpacks to places like the eastern Sierra and the Grand Canyon. There are a number of active outing leaders in the San Diego chapter who happen to be gay. These individuals publish their outings in the local chapter newsletter, the Hi-Sierran, and occasionally post to the GLS listserve as well.

There are active GLS sections in other parts of California, most notably the Angeles, Loma Prieta, San Francisco and Mother Lode chapters. They publish newsletters that contain many outings and activities throughout the year. One does not have to be a member of the Sierra Club to subscribe (although this support is encouraged) and for a nominal $10-$15 per year anyone can sign up to receive their news. URL links to these groups are as follows -

  • http://lomaprieta.sierraclub.org/gls/

These groups have all been in existence for a long time and have many excellent, seasoned leaders. Some of their trips are truly awesome...so feel free to see what they have to offer, and join them if you wish.

Since anyone who subscribes to this list can post a message, if any of you have feedback regarding the kinds of trips you would be interested in, please do so. Perhaps out of this post we can resurrect a more active local group...or not. The local chapter has agreed to allow the listserve to be used as long as there is a need for it.

Happy trails!
We also maintain an e-mail list of ongoing activities. Replace "YourFirstName YourLastName" with your own first and last names. Anyone that is subscribed to the listserve may send an e-mail to other subscribers as long as the message would be of interest to the Gay and Lesbian Sierra Club. The e-mail address for posting to the listserve is:
