Recommendations
"The San Diego Chapter recommends a vote for:
- Lane Boldman,
- Jeremy Doochin,
- Jim Dougherty,
- Larry Fahn,
and
Jerry Sutherland
in the upcoming election for the Sierra Club’s Board of Directors."
Why is voting in Club Board of Directors elections so important?
The Sierra Club is a democratically structured organization that requires the
regular flow of views on policy and priorities from its grassroots membership
in order to function well. Yearly participation in elections at all Club
levels is a major membership duty. Your Board of Directors is required to
stand for election by the membership. This Board sets Club policy and budgets
at the national level and works closely with the staff to run the Club. Voting
for candidates who express your views on how the club should grow and change is
both a privilege and responsibility of membership.
How can I participate when I don’t know any of these people? How do I learn more?
Talk with your group and chapter leadership and other experienced members you know.
Read any mailers you might receive on the election. Visit the Club’s website, which
will have the candidates’ answers to questions posed by various Club entities:
http://www.sierraclub.org/bod/ - or
contact the candidates by
telephone, e-mail, or post. They do want to hear from you! You can also use
your own judgment by taking several minutes to read the ballot statement of
each candidate.

Election Rules
What is the difference between a Nominating Committee candidate and a petition candidate?
A Nominating Committee candidate has been interviewed by the Nominating Committee,
which conducts a search for candidates during the spring, summer and fall of each year.
Their search is widely publicized across the Club, and members are encouraged to
suggest potential candidates to the Committee (SR 5.2.3). A petition candidate
is one who is nominated by members of the Club at large through the petition
process, which requires a specific number of signatures based on a percentage
of the number of Club members (Bylaw 5.3 and SR 5.3.1).
What is the rule on chapter endorsement of candidates in Club elections?
Chapters, but not groups or other Club entities, may vote to recommend one or more candidates in the election to the Board. Such a chapter recommendation must be adopted in a regular or special meeting by a two-thirds majority of the number of executive committee members of the chapter then in office. All candidates shall be given reasonable notice of any meeting at which such a recommendation is to be considered and provided an opportunity to make written materials relevant to their candidacy available at the meeting, at no cost to the chapter, for consideration by the executive committee.
