DECEMBER 2003

Annual Holiday Pot Luck Party (replaces the monthly meeting), Saturday, December 20th, 7PM at Bob Jacobson's house near Del Mar. Bob has a great new house with white carpets, so please no red wine and no orange soda which could stain permanently. Please bring your own photo and culinary creations to share. No sign up needed for the potluck, we find that each year we have enough people show up that we always get a great balance of dishes, so please cook or bake what you do best, and hopefully we'll get to share some great food recipes as well as photo ideas. We'll probably have 35mm and maybe even digital projectors. Feel free to bring your own projector if you want to show something unique, like 2-1/4." If you'd like to bring digital image files please conform to the requirements here, but no guarantees we'll have a digital projector this time. Bob's place is here and the directions are

MONTHLY MEETING: Tuesday, November 18th, 7PM. Member Slide Share Night.

This month we are proud to feature YOU, our members, in a special expanded version of our usual "member share" segment. This is your opportunity to share up to twelve (12) of your best images with the club. Both our slide projector and a digital projector will be available to display your best images onto our impressive 8 foot screen !  Additionally, those with prints, can bring framed or unframed photographs (minimum size 8" x 10"), for presentation to the group, in front of the room with the lights on. You will be given the opportunity to comment briefly on your photos, or just sit back and listen to the oohs and aaahs.

If you're currently a non-member but would like to participate, just be sure to join the Sierra Club Photo Section prior to, or at the beginning of the meeting, as this is a members-only program.

Digital photographers: please bring images formatted to meet our live show requirements here. By doing this it will allow you to share your images with the group without having any downtime or "oopses" that so often detract from these shows. Cutoff time for submissions is 7PM, after that please bring them to the next meeting.

With so many talented photographers in our club, this promises to be an interesting, eclectic, showing of some of the finest photography around.

Thanksgiving in the Sierras, Wednesday - Sunday, 26 - 30 November. Loosely organized group of friends of Lidija (if you're reading this you're a friend) heading out for the holidays and a major pot-luck pig-out. Please pre-register here. Contact: Lidija lidijagrazulis@yahoo.com (619) 846-0134.

Details in Lidija's own words: I will be driving up Wed. evening with my friends Alan & Jennifer. We'll probably leave San Diego at around 3pm and get stuck in hellish traffic, putting us in Lone Pine pretty late. We will stay at Portagee Joe campground just outside Lone Pine that night. (editors note: there are plenty of motels in Lone Pine if you're a cold-weather whimp. Expect lows around freezing or better, details here.)

Thursday morning I'd like to get up and do a sunrise shoot in the Alabama Hills. (looks like this and this and a photo guide is here and you can see a live webcam here.) Then, after breakfast, we'd like to do a little climbing in the area - rent some shoes and harnesses if you'd like to join us or else feel free to photograph away! Then we'll head up to Bishop in the afternoon to set up camp and begin the feasting!

Thursday night through Sunday we'll be camping at the Pleasant Valley campground just north of Bishop. (editors note: there are plenty of motels in Bishop, too.) The rest of the days' activities we'll figure out around the campfire on Thursday night.

Photo Exhibit:North County Society of Fine Art is having an art show at the Poway Center of Performing Arts, Espola Road at Titan Way in Poway November 01 until November 28th. Richard Hoppe entered 3 pieces and had 2 of them accepted. Richard Hoppe just found out that 1 piece "Nesting Flamingo" took 1st place ($250 award) in the mixed media category where Richard Hoppe competed against prints, drawings, colored pencil, pen and ink, sculpture, collage other photography and computer art. Richard Hoppe wasn't ever sure of the quality of the piece and had asked Steve Cirone to look at it. Steve told Richard it was one of the best Flamingo shots he had ever seen, which not only boosted Richard Hoppe's ego coming from a "Birder" but caused Richard Hoppe to enter it in other contests as well. The same piece took a another "First" at Off Track Gallery in Encinitas and a 2nd (different frame) at the Coal Gallery in Carlsbad earlier this year.

Photo Exhibit: Fire and Ice Coffee Shop through December 10, 2003: The Photography and Paintings of Paul Sewell. Although Paul take most of his photographs using traditional 35mm film, his work is then scanned into a computer and printed using archival quality paper and inks. His paintings follow more traditional mediums (although digital images have found their way into some if his work). Acrylics, pastels, charcoal and collage all come together to create vibrant, abstract works of art. Fire and Ice: 13727 Camino Cañada, Suite A6, El Cajon, CA 92021. Telephone: 619-443-0379.

Monthly Meeting: Tuesday, October 21th, 7PM: Robert de Crevecoeur presents: "Baja California to the Arctic Circle."

Born and raised in Oceanside, California, Robert de Crevecoeur's life journey has taken him from construction laborer, to Hollywood cameraman and producer, through sales and on to commercial photographer. Robert's Lightning Strikes Over the Queen Mary Luxury Ship in Downtown Long Beach image has sold over 600 copies. Robert’s work has been featured in Rider and Four Wheeler, Off Road and other national publications.

This months presentation "Baja California to the Artic Circle" chronicles Robert's nine month odyssey, up the inside passage, over the Alaskan Highway, out to the Katmi bear reserve, to Denali Park and the Arctic Circle, down the west coast of British Columbia, over the Canadian Rockies, down the continental divide, through Glacier National Park, to Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, Rocky Mountain Park, into Utah, and finishing with three days of R&R in Las Vegas.

All in all Robert traveled over 25,000 miles, crossing the continental divide more than 50 times. Now, more than 300 rolls of film later, Robert is able to share his amazing story...don't miss it !
