Old Stuff:

DECEMBER 2004

CHRISTMAS POTLUCK PHOTO PARTY: Saturday, December 11th, 7PM. This replaces the usual monthly meeting. Bring a home-made dish and photos to share!

What to bring:

1.) Your appetite! Create a dish to share. Each year we're asked who should bring what. Don't worry: we have so many members that we always seem to have just the right mix of every possible home-made salad, desert, meat, cookies, drinks, poultry, fudge, breads and everything imaginable. Make your own favorite or personal specialty dish and impress everyone! Thank goodness many of our members are talented culinary as well as photographic artists and don't just put Costco items on fancy plates.

2.) Photos! The photos start after we eat. Bring some great slides and digital files to share. (guidlines for files here.) We'll have a 35mm projector and a computer projector. If you shoot prints or some other film or digital format please fell free to bring your own medium or other format projector, and if you're using some other digital format or software other than the file guidelines feel free to bring your own computer and projector, too. Fun!

Where:

We are graced with the use of a home on the Island of Coronado thanks to our member Theresa Vernetti. The bridge toll has been waived for club members and guests attending the party.

Photo Outing: Friday - Saturday December 3 - 5: Death Valley. LEADER NEEDED, contact Ken to volunteer.

NOVEMBER 2004

PHOTO OUTING: Saturday, November 13th: Tide pools in Point Loma. Low tide of -1.1 feet happens at 3:47 PM. For more and more information see below or contact our leader, Mark Malter, at mark_malter@ins.memec.com

We will be meeting up Saturday afternoon at 3pm at the Tidepools in Point Loma. The pools are located in the Cabrillo Monument State Park. You can just ask the ranger at the guard shack about how to get down to the pools. The directions are: Interstate 8 to Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Take left on Nimitz Blvd, Right on Chatsworth and a left on Catalina which becomes Cabrillo Monument Dr. and leads you right to the gate of the park. Once you're there, just find your way to the pools and you'll see us with Camera's, and related gear.

I feel compelled to make the following statement due to the broad range of tidepool experience possible on this outing.

Please Wear comfortable shoes with plenty of grip. The rocks are covered in Algae and are extremely slippery. Be prepared to get wet and bring extra clothes in case you do. You'll want to drive home dry. Be respectful of the sea life you encounter. Don't detach anything from the rocks or take anything home. It is a felony to disturb the animals or bring them home. This even applies to empty rocks. So, take only images and memories.
I also suggest bringing a tripod and a macro lens if you have one and want those super-close up shots. If we get lucky, we'll see some OWL LIMPETS !!! Oh Joy !!

Hope to see you all there for a fun adventure at the tidepools. !!!

If you get lost, I'll have my cell phone with me when I get there (858) 361-6344.

Monthly Meeting: Thursday, October 14th, 7PM: Abe Ordover. Abe will be talking about modern landscape and animal photography and printing. Mostly, he will show slides of work of artists he features in his gallery. See more at www.ordovergallery.com

Gallery owner and fine art nature photographer Abe Ordover has always been
drawn to the inherent beauty of the natural world. His photographic work is
a testament to his passion, as is the gallery that he recently founded in
Solana Beach, CA. The Ordover Gallery is a venue with a mission of elevating
the art form to greater prominence among collectors and nature enthusiasts
by showcasing the nation's best nature and wildlife photographers.
A Yale-educated attorney, Ordover's career has included positions as a legal
professor at Hofstra University in New York and Emory University in Atlanta,
as well as visiting professor positions at Cornell and Harvard, where he won
numerous national awards for created courses for National Institute for
Trial Advocacy.

In 1980, between lectures at the University of Colorado law school, he drove
to Rocky Mountain National Park. Awestruck by the sheer beauty and
magnitude of the surroundings, he headed for the nearest town, purchased a
camera, and returned to document the magnificence the Rockies revealed to
him.

What began as a tourist's diversion quickly evolved into an accidental
second career in photographic art as he began to immerse himself in the raw
beauty of nature, reveling in the symmetry and randomness of its patterns
and patinas.

Ordover continued to spend much of his day-to-day life teaching law and
settling complex cases as a professional mediator. As time permitted, he
indulged his passion for nature photography and diligently studied the
technical side of the craft. Being selected by the Smithsonian
Environmental Research Center in 1992 to help on a major photo shoot of its
work, collections, and research, Ordover's life was pushed closer to a
major, midlife career change.

After losing his first wife to a protracted battle with cancer, Ordover
traveled to Antarctica on a cathartic journey in search of new perspectives.
Moved by the sheer majesty of the region's icescapes, Ordover resolved to
follow his passion full time. In March of 2004, Ordover moved to San Diego
County and founded the Ordover Gallery.

As an artist today, Ordover sees that the environment is precious and
fragile. His motivation is to capture and protect Earth's natural beauty
and to share the emotions and qualities felt while taking the shot --
whether of a tiny desert flower that blooms once every ten years or a
massive iceberg as it crumbles.

Ordover has traveled to southern and east Africa, South America, Alaska, the
European arctic, much of the American west, New England and the Southeast.
He has photographed the California coast, deserts and its mountains.. In
addition to capturing the natural patterns of land, sea and wildlife,
Ordover often utilizes technology to infuse his photos with powerful hues,
blurred and blended abstraction and inventive cropping to highlight and
evoke the same strong emotions he felt at the moment the shutter clicked.

Monthly Meeting: Thursday, September 9th, 7PM: Scavenger Hunt results:
The Sierra Club Photography Section Scavenger Hunt Does Downtown!

For over a decade the annual Photography Section Scavenger Hunt has been a popular tradition: An enthusiastic band of photographers descend on a location, provisioned with only their camera, 36 exposures that they can shoot, and a sheet of categories that they're asked to photograph before returning to home base within three hours. The 2004 edition was the largest scavenger outing in recent memory, with 17 photographers participating, taking waaaaay over 500 images.

The program for September is the annual Scavenger Hunt Awards Slide Show, spiced up this year by opening up the friendly competition to the digital folks as well as the traditional film shooters. Come see what the participating Photography Section photographers did with this year's categories and this year's location, Downtown San Diego!

There are always lots of terrific images taken during the hunt, and three judges will sift through the hundreds of images and curate a fun romp through Downtown using the best of the images. So you think you already know what Downtown looks like? These photographers will change your mind! Along the way, the judges will comment on what draws them to the images and provide [gentle, they promise] critiques on how to make some images even better. And, as usual, you'll get a chance to see what image the ever-controversial judges select as the best image of the outing.

So…who are these judges? This year they're none other than SCPS’ own Steve Cirone, and two veterans of Scavenger Hunts past, Jo Ann Ginepra and Jim Soe Nyun.

Come on out for an interesting—and fun!—presentation.

Please note that Steve Cirone will be too busy presenting this show with his computer to load digital member sharing images and present them.  SO, we need members to show up with laptop/s so we can do the member share digital images after the presentation.  Many of you have laptops.  Bring them!  I can't do it all.  We also need somebody to run the film projector on member sharing slides.

AUGUST 2004

PHOTO OUTING: Friday - Sunday August 27 - 29: Montaña de Oro State Park and Morro Bay. Maybe even see cute elephant seals at Piedras Blancas! LEADER NEEDED, contact Ken to volunteer.

DIRECTIONS: from Highway 5 take Clairemont Ave exit east, Go to top of hill, turn right at Burgener by the bank.

The scavenger hunt is an annual fun outing designed as an exercise in creativity. We (Jim Soe Nyun and Jo Ann Ginepra) select a theme for the Hunt and then 12 categories that we leave open to your interpretation and photographic imagination. This year the hunt is open to both slide and digital shooters. Cost for slide shooters is $15 (includes processing cost); cost for digital shooters is $10. There is a grand prize and ribbons for each category. All slides and digital images will be juried for presentation at the September 9th meeting.

Location for the shoot is DOWNTOWN, however the categories will only be released at 11am at Jim’s house. You must sign in there, pay, and pick up your categories, rules, and directions, etc. We suggest carpooling and have ideas for parking as well.

A potluck get together directly follows the outing. You must stop shooting at 3pm and turn in your images to Jim or Jo Ann at Jim’s house. Potluck items and drinks should be dropped off at 11am when you pick up your categories. You can do both the hunt and the potluck, the hunt only, or just stop by Jim’s house for the potluck any time after 3pm (no prize/processing fees due if you’re only potlucking…).

JULY 2004

Outing: Friday - Sunday July 23 - 25th, Mono Lake (east of Yosemite.) Meet at Murphy's Motel in Lee Vining at 4PM on Friday and go to Mono Lake Committee headquarters for information and then South Tufa for sunset. Also visit the park's own visitors' center for ideas and inspiration. The sun drops below The Sierra at about 7.45PM at South Tufa. Info: Ken Rockwell. Photos from previous outings here and here. This outing is lead in the Italian style.

Directions: EASY! See the hotel's website or just head north about 2 - 1/2 hours or 125 miles on I-15. Exit right at Rt 395. Continue a several more hours on Rt. 395 north for a total of about 5 - 1/2 to 7 hours or 425 miles since leaving San Diego. Murphy's Motel is on the left hand side of the street in Lee Vining, a three-block-long town through which Rt 395 is the main street.

If you miss us Friday afternoon then look for us at dinner probably at Nicely's. The best restaurant in town actually is the Mobil Station, if they're open.

If you miss us at dinner then meet down at the picnic grounds for 6AM sunrise. Try to meet at Murphy's Motel at about 5AM to head down. The sky becomes blue at 5.15AM, pinkish at 5.30, peach at about 5.45 and the disk of the sun appears 6AM. Try a very long lens (like 600 mm) to get all the tufas to appear to be in your foreground. By 7AM the light gets duller than sunrise and we typically meet at Nicely's about 7.30 or 8AM for breakfast. Then we shower, nap, and explore the rest of the day till sunset. Go to the Mono Lake Committee headquarters and look at the books and ask the people if you're out of ideas. The area is loaded with great subjects, and there's Bodie, too.

Sunrise is 5.45AM and sunset is 8.15PM calculated at the horizon, which of course you can't see. Mountains make the effective sunrise about 6AM and sunset somewhere around 7:45PM.

This outing is lead in the Italian style.

ART NIGHT AT HILL STREET CAFE AND GALLERY, Tuesday July 27th 6:00-8:00pm 524 S. Coast Hwy., Oceanside, CA 92054 (760) 966-0985. Includes complimentary appetizers and the country blues of Nathan James and Billy Watson. More importantly, see the work of member Cathy Scholl on exhibit.

Photo Class: Tuesday, July 20, 2004, 6:30 - 9:30PM: Member Ken Rockwell teaches at Palomar College. One night only! Details here.

Through July 15th: National Wildlife Federation Photo Contest. Details here.

Photo Exhibit: July 15, 2004: Frans Lanting at The Ordover Gallery, 444 South Cedros #172, Solana Beach, CA 92075, (858) 720-1121. Frans Lanting, hailed as one of the great nature photographers of our time, portrays wild creatures as ambassadors for the preservation of complete ecosystems. This unique view of wildlife, which lies at the heart of his work, provides some insight into why Mr. Lanting's photographs are so hauntingly beautiful.

Monthly Meeting: Thursday, July 8th, 7PM: Blake Shaw location and directions

Step back in time on Route 66! Let award–winning photographer Blake Shaw take you along the Will Rogers Highway, back to the time of 5-cent sodas, Edsels, Phillips 66 gasoline, bright red corvettes, and diners where waitresses still call you Hun’. Lace up your saddle-shoes, sleep in a wigwam, drink Coke out of a glass bottle, climb a giant rabbit, and enjoy life away from the Interstate.

Blake Shaw uses his unique style of bold color and composition to evoke the timeless qualities of life along Route 66. Colorful motel signs, vintage cars, abandoned gasoline pumps, wooden indians, roadside dinosaurs, and Burma Shave signs are brought to life. He has spent many weeks in the past two years driving west-to-east and east-to-west along 66, seeking out images beyond what you see in guidebooks.

If you are too young to remember Route 66, this will pique your interest in the past. If you drove out West on Route 66, this will bring back waves of nostalgia. If you just love outstanding photography, this show’s for you!

Blake Shaw specializes in travel, fine-art and sports photography. His photography has won many awards, including Best of Show in the 1995 Del Mar Fair International Photography Exhibition, First Place in the 2004 Del Mar Fair, and First Place in the 2003 San Diego Union Nature and Eye Photo Contest. He has been published in Smithsonian Magazine, Islands Magazine, and has had cover photos on A-16 Magazine, San Diego Physician Magazine and Coronado Lifestyles Magazine.

Born and raised in San Diego, Blake maintains a private practice of ophthalmology in Coronado. His photography can be seen at www.blakeshawphotography.com.

At this short meeting we plan and schedule our outings for the coming months. APRIL 2004

Poppy updates here and here.

Pinhole Day!!!

Fourth Annual Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day (WPPD): Sunday, 25 April 2004. People throughout the world are invited to make a pinhole photograph during these twenty-four hours. Each author will be able to submit an image to the unique and international WPPD gallery at www.pinholeday.org.

This event is absolutely popular, egalitarian and open to anybody, anywhere in all world's regions. All lovers of lensless photography, as well as people who have never tried this creative and enjoyable technique, are encouraged to participate.

Pinhole photographs are made without lenses, using a tiny hole as the image-forming device. Photographs are made with simple and inexpensive tools: from shoeboxes and tomato tins to pinholes fitted on regular cameras. A world of pure creativity, a tender and joyful approach to photography, and the discovery of the emotion and the wonder of the photographic action itself, far from the excessive and oppressive power of extreme technology, await the pinhole photographer.

The WPPD web exhibition of 2001 showed 291 pictures by pinhole photographers from 24 nations, the 2002 exhibition contained 903 photographs from 35 nations; in 2003, 1082 pinhole photographers from 43 nations participated.

On 25 April 2004 there will be numerous events all over the world dedicated to the pinhole photography: meetings, lectures, workshops and informal gatherings to celebrate the Fourth Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day and to increase the former editions' success.

WPPD is the result of the work of a group of volunteers from across the globe. Their combined efforts and individual skills contribute to make this event an ever-growing success, allowing more and more people to discover the beauty and mysteries of pinhole photography.

From the San Diego Natural History Museum:Flowers after the Storm: Wildflowers and the Cedar Fire. In October 2003, the Cedar fire charred over 270,000 acres in just one week. However, fires, even large ones, are a part of San Diego's natural ecology. After the flames are gone and the smoke has cleared, a marvelous event takes place: the hillsides are carpeted with brilliant wild flowers. During the evening class you will be introduced to fire ecology, an overview of the Cedar Fire, and the variety of colorful wildflowers expected to grow on the burn area. On Saturday, we will visit several sites burned in the Cedar Fire between the coast and the mountains to see post-fire blooms up close. Price includes van transportation.
Class: Tuesday, April 20, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Field trip: Saturday, April 24, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
$69.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park's number for advice on where and when to find the best wildflowers is (760) 767-4684. Each off-road vehicle must bring 1 gallon of water and food for the day. Drivers who can take passengers can list spaces they have to carry passengers for 4X4 driving with Rob. There will be no stores where we are going. Bring food for lunch and snacks to cover through dinner if anyone has a problem we have to address in the field. Vehicles should have tools for minor repairs and a quart of oil or any fluids their vehicle tends to consume. Monthly Meeting: Thursday, April 8th, 7PM. (postponed from March:) Internationally renowned digital imaging authority Ken Rockwell will share his decades of experience to shed light on digital photography topics that confuse many of today's photographers. Ken would rather show us his art, but bows to popular demand to show us not only little-known practical tricks like how to straighten a horizon perfectly and automatically in PhotoShop, but also clarify many areas like how to get your colors to match from your screen to your prints, what you should or shouldn't care about when it comes to color profiles, bit depths, resolutions, RAW and JPG and TIF formats, the realities of film and digital capture, and the best ways to prepare your images for printing and the best way to get absolutely stunning prints. Ken is unique in his ability to put excruciatingly complex technical jargon into everyday language so the freshest beginner can outproduce even a crusty old professional.

Ken Rockwell is the man behind KenRockwell.com, the internet's most popular single-person photographic anchor website with 10,000 visitors each day reading over 3,500,000 pages every month. KenRockwell.com has more readers every month than Popular Photography magazine has annual subscribers. Ken has been studying digital photography since 1973, when only our federal government could afford it for processing intelligence images. Ken invented the world's first integrated circuit digital colorspace converter 15 years ago and has been working in digital imaging full-time since the 1980s both in La Jolla and Hollywood, where he has worked in the design of film scanners and consulted to organizations like Fox Television, The National Security Agency, NBC, The British Broadcasting Company, Warner Brothers and DirecTV. As an artist Ken has been exhibited in galleries that also have exhibited work by Ansel Adams. Ken's works are held in public and private collections across the USA. Ken won both first place prizes in the San Diego Union-Tribune's Nature and Eye photo contest in 2001 and his works were exhibited at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Ken was granted his first US Patent in 2002 and lectured on photography in Italy in 2003. Ken won the grand prize trip to Hawaii in the Union-Tribune's most recent travel photo contest. Ken won all these contests with prints made on Price Club paper printed on his four-year-old obsolete inkjet printer competing against thousands of real photo prints. Ken can show you how to get results instead of just getting more gear!

Ken is looking forward to sharing all he can about how to get great results with the equipment you already have, so don't miss this opportunity to hear one of the world's most recognized experts help you make the images you want!

This program will take you to the remote islands and reefs of the Sulu Sea in the Philippine Islands. The main part of the program will take you diving to explore the incredible underwater world of the Tubataha reefs to learn about the colorful and diverse marine life that inhabit them, including manta rays. Although still relatively pristine, sadly, even these remote reef areas are being faced with illegal fishing activities that threaten to destroy forever what has been considered one of the most beautiful and diverse marine ecosystems in the world.
