(postponed due to illness) Monthly Meeting, Thursday, September 8th, 7PM, Otto Center, San Diego Zoo: Aaron Chang, one of the world's most recognized names in surf photography.
World famous surf photographer
and the owner of a multimillion-dollar
clothing company, Aaron Chang presents Living the Light, a photographic look
at the planet. Born in Tucson, Arizona, Aaron was introduced to the ocean
during summer vacations to Pacific Beach. Chang first recorded surfing when
a broken ankle in high school left him landlocked. He picked up a Super 8
camera and shot footage of his friends surfing off the IB Pier.
At 17, he flew to Hawaii
to surf, working odd jobs on Oahu and living in a
rented tool shed. At 19, Chang made a movie of the 75/76 North Shore
season, titled Out of the Blue. After a packed showing at the Waialua Rec
Center at 50 cents a head, he toured the film along the California coast
that summer. While stopping at Surfing magazine for a film review, he met
photo editor Larry "Flame" Moore, who encouraged him to take up still
photography back in Hawaii, which he did. "I was scrounging a living by
selling 8"x10" surf photos. When a staff photographer position opened
at
Surfing in 1979, he jumped at the chance to travel the world.
The dedication paid off
well beyond the relatively tiny surfing subculture,
where he rose to legendary status. His work appeared in more than a hundred
different publications, from rock and roll to fashion to directing a
three-dimensional action sports film to appearances in highly successful
books on photojournalism.
In 1993, Chang married
Erika Fichter, a University of San Diego graduate
with a background in marketing and business. Together, in 1994, the couple
launched Aaron Chang Clothing with a line consisting of six T-shirts. "I
didn't know she would build an empire," Chang admits. "It's satisfying
to
find financial independence, especially from the surf mags. As a mag
photographer, you're basically an indentured servant."
Work and family have finally
overtaken surfing in Chang's life. The
ever-growing business requires constant attention, and his first child,
Saxon Thomas, was born August 21, 2000. He still surfs a couple of times
each week, mostly near his Del Mar home, but occasionally at Black's for
real satisfaction. "Photography, like surfing," he suggests, "is
an infinite
process, a constantly evolving exploration of life. The more you know, the
less you know. Every time you arrive at a level, you're at the bottom of the
next level. It's endlessly challenging, and I think that's why I've stayed
with it."

Monthly Meeting, Thursday, August 11th, 7PM, Otto Center, San Diego Zoo: Tom O Scott. Tom O Scott started in photography relatively late in life, though he grew up around art and always admired it, particularly German Expressionism. He started out with a small digital camera, and then, in search of more resolution at a reasonable price, "regressed" to film. For the past three years he has used a Mamiya medium format range finder, and only in the past few months has he returned to the digital world.
One of the recurring themes in his work is a fascination with patterns made in the sand, either by the receding tides or by the winds carving dunes. His "Sand Art" portfolios have been displayed at three solo shows in the past three years - at Encinitas City Hall in 2003, the Photographer's Gallery in Escondido in 2004, and the Bard Gallery in 2005. His documentary work, "Lettuce Workers" won first place at the Black and White Spyder Awards in 2004. He has entered the San Diego County Fair for the past three years. In 2003, he won 3rd place in abstract color; in 2004, he won 1st and 4th place, and this year won 1st place and three honorable mentions.
The theme of the talk will be "Sand Art - Large and Small". It will feature a selection of the images created on the beaches of Torrey Pines and Solana Beach, along with a sand dune portfolio from Oceano Dunes and Guadalupe Dunes. Tom will discuss how the shots were made, and hopefully the images will stimulate your imagination as well.

OUTING: Saturday June 25th, 11AM: MoPA Exhibit. Contact: Cathy Scholl
Monthly Meeting, Thursday, June 9th, 7PM, Otto Center, San Diego Zoo. Cathy Scholl: Documentary Travel Photography and Portraits from India and Myanmar.
As a teenager Cathy Scholl had an interest in Equine and Surfing Photography. While on a Spiritual journey to India in 1995 she rediscovered her passion for photography and now specializes in Documentary travel photography and portraits.
Since 1995 there have been 10 trips to India, as well as many other countries, continued studies in photography and many exhibitions and awards.
The initial attraction
in photographing distant lands and vanishing cultures was the obvious...enjoying
and sharing the vibrant colors, unusual customs and costumes as well as providing
an artistic record of these cultures in order to help preserve them. Beyond
that the camera has provided Cathy with the opportunity to connect closely with
her subjects. What she has discovered and strives to portray in her images is
the universality of human experience in spite of obvious differences.

Monthly Meeting, Thursday, May 12th, 7PM, Otto Center, San Diego Zoo. Erik Eilers, Nature Photographer and Cetacean Photogrammetrist.
Erik Eilers lives in San Diego with his wife Jennifer, and has been a photo-nut for the last 6 years. Coming from a small town in Maryland, he has an extremely active lifestyle. Intrests apart from photography include Mt. bike and road bike racing, surfing, hiking, and traveling. Immediately after college, he was commissioned as an officer in the NOAA Corps. He spent the next two years aboard a ship doing oceanographic research from Maine to Texas. Erik was going places most people rarely get the chance to go, and figured he better get a camera to document his travels.
After two years of bouncing from marine sanctuaries in the northeast to islands in the Florida Keys to the oil rig littered waters off texas, Erik was promoted to a land assignment at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, CA as a Cetacean Photogrammetrist. With a growing intrest in photography, his work has taken him all over the world, and places few people have ever seen.
Erik's goal is to bring images of these lesser traveled places to people who are not as fortunate to get to the tighter corners of the earth, with a hope that they will see the beauty and want to preserve the beautiful world in which we live.
Come see images of Erik's latest adventure to Antarctica and learn a little bit about the Killer Whales in that part of the world.

Monthly
Meeting: Thursday, January 13th, 7PM: Jim Cline: Travels in Guatemala &
Peru
Join award winning travel photographer Jim Cline on a journey through
the fascinating and beautiful countries of Guatemala & Peru
Jim’s wanderlust and search for compelling images has brought him to
30 countries around the globe, but his area of special interest is in the countries
of Latin America. He especially enjoys exploring less-traveled areas, photographing
the indigenous peoples and traditional cultures found in developing nations.
His work has been displayed in galleries and the San Diego History Museum,
and published in numerous publications. Jim runs photo tours to destinations
throughout Latin America. For information on the tours see JimCline.com
and click on Photo Tours.
Jim’s presentation features his travels on several trips to the countries of Guatemala and Peru to document the ancient cultures of the Maya and Inca inhabitants. His journey begins in the highlands of Guatemala, home of the modern day Maya. We’ll go from Antigua the original capital of Central America, on to Lake Atitlan, described by author Aldous Huxley as the most beautiful lake in the world. The blue lake, ringed by volcanoes, is home to some of the most traditional Mayan villages in the country. We’ll go on to visit other villages on their market days and witness traditional festivals and ancient healing ceremonies.
The journey continues to Peru where we’ll travel high in the Andes to Cuzco, the Sacred Valley of the Inca, and of course Machu Picchu. We’ll see ancient Inca ruins, and colorful markets where the modern day descendents of the Incas still carry on many of the ancient traditions. We’ll explore traditional villages on the islands of Lake Titicaca, which at over 12,000 feet is the highest navigable lake in the world. Finally we venture high into the Andes in search of the elusive Andean Condor, the largest flying land bird on earth.
