November 2007

MEETING: Thursday, November 15th, 2007, 7PM: Ken Rockwell: COLOR.

Ken Rockwell, decades-long photo section member and, more recently, the world's most-recognized outdoor photographer, will give a live showing of his work on COLOR. Some was created last month in The Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra, and more will be domestic and international work from Guatemala and México City DF.

Ken apologizes for missing last month's meeting, but he was out producing the work he'll be showing at this month's meeting.

Ken is bringing camera-original Velvia transparencies and will be treating us to direct projection from them, presuming Ken's crappy home projectors will fill our huge screen better than our crappy Costco digital projector. If you have a Leitz Xenon 35mm or medium format projector, bring it on.

Here are some teasers:

September 2007

Lodge Weekend: 29 - 30 September 2007. This is the club's most popular annual event. We get together for a weekend of photography at the Sierra Club's lodge in the Laguna Mountains.

See the PDFs of 2007 Lodge Weekend Information and the 2007 Lodge Weekend Sign-up Form.

Peter Gorwin founded the Photographic Arts Group that operates under the auspices of the Escondido Arts Partnership. It was formed for the purpose of promoting, exhibiting and educating photographers throughout the San Diego area. Any photographer is welcome to join. During the last year he’s embarked on organizing a series of workshops designed to reveal the mysteries of Photoshop with a group of his colleagues. He’s been a judge at the San Diego County Fair for 3 years.

Over the last decade he’s won prizes in various competitions: at the Del Mar Fair in 1991; 3rd place in the Black & White division at the 42nd International Exhibition of Photography; and in 2002, 2nd place for a digital blend in the eArts division. Last year he exhibited his fine art photography with the Ordover Project in the Cedros Design District.

He attended Columbia College of Communications, and Loyola University in Chicago. Though always interested in photography, he received his first formal instruction in photography in an ROP class taught by Bob Bjorkquist during the 80's. In 1992, he completed an AA Degree in Photography from Palomar College. He completed his English Degree at California State University at San Marcos in 1994.

Peter's work spans alternative processes, pinhole, analog and digital. However, He has enthusiastically pursued digital photography as his primary means of expression. Peter taught high school Photography for 3 years during the late '90's at the Army and Navy Academy, a private military school in Carlsbad, California. Reach him at pshelleyg@cox.net. cell: 760 250 5902. His website is petergorwin.com. There you will be able to learn more information about the ongoing workshops.

Presentation:

Peter Gorwin will show basic workflow from the digital camera, to Bridge, to Camera Raw, and finally to Photoshop CS3. He'll demonstrate new tools added to these various programs, but also ways that one could have made such adjustments before the addition of such new tools. He'll also show you some classic ways to convert your color photographs to black & white for both traditional and more creative results. If time permits, hell demonstrate advanced sharpening techniques and noise reduction.

August 2007

MEETING: Thursday, August 16th, 2007, 7PM: David King.

From David: My recent work has been following the concept of creating an image so hyper-real that it presents the viewer with a view of a subject beyond the capability of the human eye to have resolved were they standing where the camera was located.

This has required the creation of large (24x36 and up) images made using a technique called mosaic or multi-row panorama. It is the breaking up of a single image into many smaller sections, sometimes 30 or more, shooting those sections, then stitching them back together to form the single image. The result is astounding.

Also - presentation of scavenger hunt results!

July 2007

NEXT MEETING: Thursday, July 19th, 2007, 7PM: Wayne Richard! NEW 2007 MEETING LOCATION: Wesley Palms, 2404 Loring Street, Pacific Beach 92109, (858) 581-8423. map.

A little from Wayne:

My love for photography is seeded in the emotions that are evoked by taking the time to stop, see, and emotionally absorb what is in front of me. As a serious photographer for over 30 years now, I have built a synergistic technical career as a color imaging scientist that facilitates my understanding of the tools of the trade. Recently, I expanded my career to encompass my primary motivations by registering wayne-photo.com as an official business where I accept commissions, sell prints, provide individual and group instruction, and offer a variety of technical support services and consultation. I look forward to sharing some of my nature images from Costa Rica to home with you, travel photos, stories and experiences, and also trying to answer any compelling technical questions that you might have. I would feel personally rewarded if I in any way am able to add to your knowledge base or level of inspiration for our shared interest of photography!

It is no accident that our paths are about to cross given our common appreciation of nature and the companion interest in photography that it inspires. We love capturing and sharing beautiful visions of the natural world that surrounds us. Ironically, as our paths may cross at a common intersection the individual paths that bring us together are unique. That's what makes photography so interesting and diverse; every photograph that is captured is not only a statement about the subject that is in front of the lens but a collective expression of all of the lifelong experiences, inspirations, and other influences of the photographer that is on the other end.

Party: Wednesday, July 4th 2 - 6PM at Bob and Rose Jacobson's house, 13532 Penfeild Point, San Diego 92130, 2 - 6PM, potluck. Please RSVP to (858) 794-8900 or awish4roses@san.rr.com. Bring samples of your work to show and we'll see you there!

April 2007

Outing: Salvation Mountain, Niland, California.

Monthly Meeting: Thursday, April 19th, 7PM: Kevin M. Connors: Back to the Future: The Art, Craft, and Zen of Digital.

Kevin

With the advent of new technology for the capturing, processing, enhancing, and printing of photographic images has come a "back to the future" effect for those photographers embracing the idea of "printing their own." Seventy-five years ago, there were no labs or other professional services as there are today, so photographers had to do everything in house, from shooting, to developing, to ultimately printing their own images. Thanks to the constantly evolving world of digital, photographers, as artists realizing their vision from beginning to end, are able to create beautiful works of art that will last for centuries and provide other opportunities for growth, development, and the pure pleasure derived from "sustainable" creativity.

The goal of this presentation is to provide a sequential overview of the front end of digital workflow, from download to creating a .psd master file in Photoshop. Using Lightroom, the latest addition to the Adobe workflow solution, photographers can intake files, quickly database them, and ultimately create superb quality, high bit master files. This presentation is designed to introduce this new technology and the new concepts, techniques, and opportunities available for photographers to realize their complete artistic vision.

Time permitting, those attending will also learn some of the fine points to personally printing on fine art papers while realizing their artistic vision, furthering their craft, and having their work live on for hundreds of years.

This Porsche is preserving Stovepipe Dunes because this photo is from Porsche's press introduction of the Cayenne Turbo S in Dubai. It's nowhere near Death Valley.

I was taken by how it looks just like Stovepipe Dunes with the Grapevine Mountains behind it at dawn, so it got my attention and I knew it would catch yours. Hope to see you in Death Valley, just don't do this!

Monthly Meeting: Thursday, February 15th, 7PM Iceland and Spitzbergen: Bruce Muirhead.

NEW MEETING LOCATION: Wesley Palms, 2404 Loring Street, Pacific Beach 92109, (858) 581-8423. map.

Polar Bear

Yes, it’s midwinter here in San Diego, but you’ll need a heavier coat to visit these arctic lands! Local nature and travel photographer Bruce Muirhead will present a multi-media slide show on Iceland, Norway and Spitzbergen. A former Peace Corps Volunteer and National Park Ranger, Bruce has traveled and photographed the world for the past 25 years, visiting over 100 countries and all 7 continents. Bruce has a degree in Geology and did his thesis on glaciology – useful in these largely ice-carved wonderlands!

ICELAND: A little-visited land of Fire and Ice – largely volcanic and sitting on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where active volcanoes are still creating new land, Iceland is home to Scandinavians who still speak the ancient language of the Vikings. Sparsely populated and mostly treeless, Iceland has spectacular icecaps, fjords and many thundering waterfalls. There are many hot springs, including the original geysers, named after the place they were found, at “Geysir.”

Walruses

NORWAY: Bruce takes us on a tour of the most spectacular scenery in Europe – the glacier-carved fjords of western Norway. Some measuring over 100 miles long, the fjords are narrow inlets flanked by huge cliffs and towering mountains. Many small ‘Heidi’ villages dot the landscape which is covered deep green forests and fields with an abundance of wildflowers.

SPITZBERGEN: A territory of Norway, Spitzbergen is an island archipelago only 700 miles from the North Pole, one of the most northerly land masses in the world. Largely covered in ice-clad mountains, Spitzbergen is the home of many arctic wildlife species: seals, walruses and polar bears. Bruce circumnavigated the Ireland-sized island aboard a Russian icebreaker, landing at many interesting sites along the rugged coast.

For a preview of Bruce’s photography, visit his website at: www.FarAndAwayPhotographicArts.com

January 2007

Outing to Opening: Thursday, 18 January, 2007, 6 - 8:30PM: Jim Cline at The Ordover Gallery, Studio 172, 444 South Cedros Avenue, Solana Beach, CA 92075. (858) 720-1121. ordoverproject.com

Outing to Opening: Saturday, 13 January, 2007, 10:45 AM - 1PM: Christopher Burkett at the Natural History Museum. Meet 10:45AM at the museum. (There's also a lecture from 9:30 - 10:30)

I (Ken Rockwell) have seen Christopher Burkett's work at the Ansel Adams Gallery and I've never seen anything more amazing. You must see his work if you haven't already.

Christopher Burkett is/was one of the world's last remaining photographers printing optically on Cibachrome from large format transparencies. In recent years he downgraded to Hasselblad instead of 8 x 10" and I'm unsure if he's exhibiting optical prints or if he's also downgraded to lightjets and inkjets like everyone else. See his large format Cibachromes before you die: it's as good as Ansel Adams, and in color. His work is epiphanal, regardless of format!

There may be a charge to get into this, contact The Ordover Gallery, who mailed me an invitation, for a pass.

The 9:30AM lecture is eight bucks. Look it up here. I'm going to that, too.

-----------

Photo Opening: Sat. Jan 6th from 6-9PM, OPT gallery.

The last one was a real class act with decent wines, cheese and food, followed on Sunday by a lecture by David King who teaches Photography at UCSD.

January’s opening features work by Jack Iskin, and Peter Nagainis will have a lot of prints in the exhibition as well.

The exhibit runs from Jan 6 to Feb. 3. Gallery hours are Tues-Sat 10-6 and Sun 12-5.

Monthly Meeting: Thursday, January 11th, 7PM, Otto Center, San Diego Zoo: Underwater adventures. The cold, the colorful and the sublime. Travel vicariously around the world with Steve and Marie to Antactica, Galapagos, the South Pacific, everywhere there are interesting animals, people and behaviors to photograph.

Marie Tartar and Steve Eilenberg are a husband and wife team of diagnostic radiologists practicing together in La Jolla, CA and traveling the globe as professional caliber nature and underwater photographers. Diving since 1990, they took up underwater photography in 1996. Since then, this consuming passion has taken them to destinations ranging from Galapagos to Indonesia as well as the frigid waters of British Columbia. Along the way, their photographic interests have expanded to encompass topside nature and landscape photography, as well as travel photography. Steve and Marie's work has been published in a variety of books, magazines and calendars, and has been included in exhibitions at the San Diego Natural History Museum, the Birch Aquarium and the Smithsonian.
