Sierra Club San Diego Ski Section Calendar

March 13-16, Friday-Monday, Montecito-Sequoia Lodge

Montecito-Sequoia Lodge

Trip begins at the Lodge Friday morning, March 13, so allow driving time in your schedule. Most of us will be driving up Thursday evening (carpool) and staying in a Motel 6 in Tulare where reservations have been made. We will drive to the Lodge Friday morning and chains or 4WD may be required. Coordinator: Monique Alkemade,

The spacious Montecito Sequoia Lodge, based at 7500' elevation, provides a breathtaking view of the snow-capped peaks of the Great Western Divide and is set amid large and imposing fir and pine trees. Some of California's most scenic trails begin at the steps of the lodge.

  • Group lodging in your own bed (double occupancy, lodge room, private bath) Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and all meals.
  • Back-county ski touring for 2 groups of advanced beginners (or better) with experienced Sierra Club leaders and track or back-country skiing (including lessons). Independent skiing is always available.
  • Cost also includes a profit for the X/C Ski Section which makes these trips possible.
  • Use of hot tub and groomed ski tracks.
  • Gratuity for lodge staff.

  • Transportation costs. Carpools and caravans are to be arranged independently and a participant list will be provided.
  • Park entrance fee
  • Ski rentals
  • Breakfast and lunch on Friday, lunch on Monday.
  • Lodging en route. It is recommended that you drive most of the way on Thursday so you can join us when the trip begins on Friday morning.

  • $447 a lodge room all to yourself
  • $353 per person for double occupancy
  • $342 per person for triple occupancy
  • $322 per person for four people in a room (two share a king bed)

The rooms have 1 king bed or 1 king and one bunk bed.

March 26-30, 2015, Thursday-Monday, Rock Creek Lodge.

Rock Creek Lodge

Coordinator: Alice Fichandler, 619-226-6083

Come join us for a weekend of cross country skiing in the Sierras. Rock Creek Lodge is set in a spectacular area between Bishop and Mammoth, with many outstanding ski possibilities. There are groomed tracks as well as challenging back country trails so there is something for everyone. March is traditionally considered the best month for this area, so we are excited about this trip.

Accommodations vary depending upon your choice. You may choose to stay in a dorm type cabin heated with a wood stove where bathroom facilities are located in a separate building. The cost here is $125 per person per night. You might choose a rustic cabin which has an indoor bathroom, but is heated with a wood stove. The cost is $145 per person per night. Finally, there are modern cabins with central heat and indoor plumbing. The price here is $150 per person per night. Note that there are many more of the modern cabins, so if you wish to reserve one of the other ones, it is best to get your reservation in early. All that is required up front is a $50 deposit.

Rock Creek Lodge includes breakfast and dinner in their pricing. Packed lunches are extra. Our past experience has been that the food is excellent. People have been known to come up just to have dinner at the lodge. For more information about Rock Creek Lodge, please visit their website at

We plan to carpool on Thursday, March 26, up to either Bishop or Tom's Place so that we can get an early start on Friday morning. At 10am Friday morning we will meet the staff from Rock Creek who will take our luggage up to the Lodge. We will ski the approximately 2 miles to the Lodge unencumbered.

This trip is geared for intermediate and advanced beginner skiers. If interested, please contact the coordinator for more information.
